“Man tends to identify the urge to be self-serving with his ego—himself. In contrast he is inclined to identify the will to be altruistic with some influence outside himself—God. And indeed is such a judgment right.” 103:2.10 (1131.9)
This insight names a tension every reflective person recognizes: the inner pull between ego-driven desire and self-giving love. We instinctively claim selfish impulses as our own, while attributing higher, altruistic urges to something beyond us. This distinction is not mere psychology—it points to a deeper spiritual reality unfolding within human consciousness.
The will to be altruistic does not feel manufactured by the ego. It often arises quietly, unexpectedly, and persistently, inviting us toward generosity, forgiveness, courage, and compassion. These higher impulses feel as though they come from a source greater than personal survival or advantage. In this sense, it is right to associate them with God’s indwelling presence, gently guiding the soul toward higher values.
Spiritual growth, then, is not about suppressing the self but about learning to identify with the higher will within. As we increasingly choose truth, goodness, and love over fear, pride, and convenience, the human will begins to harmonize with the divine will. What once felt like an external influence becomes recognized as our truest and highest self.
