The Gift of Divine Free Will

May 23, 2026 | Santiago Kneeland

Human free will is a sacred gift from the Universal Father, allowing each person to participate freely in the divine adventure of becoming a true son or daughter of God.

The Gift of Divine Free Will

"Of his divine free-willness, the Universal Father has given you your creature personalities. You have been endowed with a measure of that divine spontaneity of freewill action which God shares with all who may become his sons." 40:6.7 (448.6)

One of the most remarkable truths about human existence is that our personalities are not accidents of nature but gifts from the Universal Father himself. Each person possesses a unique identity endowed with the dignity of choice. This divine endowment of personality carries with it the extraordinary privilege of free will—the ability to choose, to love, to seek truth, and to consciously participate in the unfolding purpose of life.

This freedom is not merely a biological or psychological trait; it reflects something of the very nature of God. The Father shares with his creatures a measure of his own spontaneity of action. Through free will, humans are able to respond to divine guidance, grow spiritually, and align their decisions with higher values. In this sense, every choice becomes an opportunity to participate in the living relationship between the Creator and his evolving children.

Yet the gift of free will also carries profound responsibility. The freedom to choose invites each person to decide what kind of being they will become. Through countless decisions—large and small—human personality gradually grows into its eternal form. When free will is guided by love, truth, and the desire to do the Father's will, it becomes the pathway through which mortal life transforms into a divine adventure.
