“On the evolutionary worlds, selfhood is material; it is a thing in the universe and as such is subject to the laws of material existence. It is a fact in time and is responsive to the vicissitudes thereof. Survival decisions must here be formulated.” 112:7.6 (1238.1)
Human life unfolds within the realm of time, change, and material existence. Our physical bodies grow, age, and eventually pass away. Our circumstances shift, opportunities appear and disappear, and every day presents new challenges and possibilities. In this evolutionary world, the self begins as a material personality living within the limitations and conditions of the physical universe. As such, it is subject to the uncertainties and fluctuations that characterize mortal existence.
Yet these changing circumstances are not without purpose. The material life serves as the arena in which the most important decisions of all are made. Every choice between selfishness and service, fear and faith, truth and error, contributes to the formation of character and the growth of the soul. The experiences of time are not merely events to be endured; they are opportunities through which an eternal destiny is shaped. The temporary nature of earthly life gives significance to the decisions made within it.
This teaching reminds us that survival is not an automatic consequence of existence but a living partnership between human choice and divine opportunity. The soul grows through the decisions we make day by day. While the material self belongs to time, the emerging spiritual self reaches toward eternity. Every sincere choice for truth, goodness, beauty, and divine values strengthens that eternal identity. Thus, the fleeting moments of mortal life acquire immeasurable importance, for within them the destiny of the soul is being formed.
