Going the second mile of communication is taking the time to know a person, to listen attentively to their needs, and to communicate in the way that reaches their heart. It takes real effort and the will to love a person in the way they need to be emotionally contacted, rather than our own default method, or easier way of communicating. We are told to be cautious with our expectations of others also, thereby lessening the potential for disappointment.
Dr. Gary Chapman wrote: "We live in an 'on demand' culture—streaming media, gathering information, and ordering almost anything is just a click away. Technology gives us instant access to what we want, when we want it. But this convenience doesn’t translate to human relationships. When we expect people to respond on demand, frustration follows."
"Patience is a key marker of love. Being loving means accepting others’ imperfections and recognizing that people aren’t machines. They have their own thoughts and feelings, and their choices won’t always match our expectations."
"The next time you feel frustrated by someone who doesn't meet your expectations, pause, be patient, and offer grace. Remember, they are human… just like you."
