The Courage to Forgive

April 17, 2026 | Santiago Kneeland

True spiritual strength is revealed not through retaliation but through the courage to forgive and release resentment.

The Courage to Forgive

“He never ceased to warn his disciples against the evil practice of retaliation; he made no allowance for revenge, the idea of getting even. He deplored the holding of grudges.” 140:8.5 (1579.7)

One of the most radical teachings of Jesus was his rejection of retaliation. In a world where responding to injury with revenge often seems natural or even justified, he warned his followers about the destructive cycle created by the desire to “get even.” Retaliation only multiplies conflict, deepens resentment, and traps the soul in a pattern of hostility that obscures the higher path of spiritual living.

Jesus understood that grudges imprison the one who holds them. When we nurture resentment, we keep old wounds alive in our minds and hearts, allowing past offenses to shape present attitudes. But the life of the spirit invites us into something greater—the freedom that comes from forgiveness. Releasing the desire for revenge does not mean denying justice or ignoring wrongdoing; it means refusing to allow bitterness to rule our inner life.

The spirit-led individual seeks a higher response. Instead of retaliation, the disciple chooses patience, mercy, and understanding. This approach reflects the character of the divine Father, whose love is patient and whose mercy is extended even to those who fail. In living this way, we help break the endless chain of resentment and become instruments of peace in a troubled world.
