The Blessing Hidden in Work

April 4, 2026 | Santiago Kneeland

Work isn't just a necessity – it's a gift that shapes us, sparks creativity, and lets us contribute to the world 😊.

The Blessing Hidden in Work

"Labor, the efforts of design, distinguishes man from the beast, whose exertions are largely instinctive. The necessity for labor is man’s paramount blessing." 69:2.5 (773.6)

Labor is often seen as a burden—something to endure on the way to comfort. But in truth, work is one of humanity’s greatest gifts.

Animals act primarily through instinct. Their exertion follows patterns written into their nature. Human labor, however, is different. It is guided by intention, imagination, planning, and purpose. Through work, we transform ideas into reality. We build, improve, create, and serve.

Labor develops character. It disciplines the mind, strengthens the will, and awakens the creative powers of personality. Through effort, we discover our abilities and refine our potential.

Without the necessity of labor, much of what makes us human—initiative, ingenuity, perseverance—would remain dormant. Work calls forth our highest capacities and gives us the opportunity to participate in the ongoing creation and improvement of the world.
