Celebrating the Remembrance Supper

Growing up as a Southern Baptist in the “deep south” the Lord’s Supper was celebrated four to six times a year. As a young child (unbaptized) I would watch my parents and all the other church members partake of the wine (grape juice – no alcohol in Southern Baptist churches) and the unleavened bread (usually matzoh).

That all changed when I was baptized at eleven and became a member of the church. I remember how special I felt the first time I could participate. Special because I was a recognized believer in Jesus Christ.

Fast forward more than 15 years and I celebrated my first Remembrance Supper with my fellow Jesusonians, students of the Urantia Revelation and followers of the Jesus before Christianity. It was on the shores of the lake at the Northern Baptist Assembly in Green Lake, Wisconsin and was led by Jeff Wattles.

It was very different from what I had experienced in the past. This experience was much less formal as we sat on the grass, passing juice and bread... serving our siblings and being served by them. We spoke joyfully of stories from the Master’s life and remembered so many of the attributes he embodied and left to us – both to learn from and try to emulate. I truly felt He was present!

"The remembrance supper is the believer’s symbolic rendezvous with Michael." 179:5.6

Over the next 25 years I celebrated the Remembrance Supper in the study group that often met at my home, or when I went to UB conferences, or attended an event at the Foundation.

In 2012 The Christ Experiment began to celebrate the Remembrance Supper within their group and in 2014 they published it to the UB community at large. That was the year I started to follow them and their suggestions about how to celebrate. I have done this every year since, both on Zoom and in person.

This year The Christ Experiment graciously offered all of the many documents, pictures, encouragement letters and more, that they have produced over the last 12 years to The Center For Unity to use. The result is the beautiful new RemembranceSupper.org website, where you will be able to find all of the details you need to participate in the global event, and plan your own local event!

Watching and participating in the evolution of this project has been deeply personal for me. It is the only “ceremony” our beloved Michael asked of us while he was a human. I have great hopes that in the future this will evolve into a bridge to our Christian siblings.

This year CFU is offering a Remembrance Supper originating in Israel at sundown on the 6th of April. For me, living in the Pacific Northwest, that will be in the morning and I look forward to that time to be with so many of my friends on Zoom. But at sundown , 7:45 PM Pacific Daylight Time we will be gathering at my home and celebrating in person with my friends in the Vancouver/Portland area.

I hope that you will participate in one or multiple events. Spend time with your fellows knowing that Michael is truly with you. Blessings!

“And as often as you do this, do it in remembrance of me."

An event T-shirt is available if you would like to participate in that way. Click Here to purchase your T-shirt. All proceeds directly fund the CFU projects. Thank you for your generous support.
