“Civilization, science, and advanced religions must deliver mankind from those fears born of the dread of natural phenomena. And so should greater enlightenment deliver educated mortals from all dependence on intermediaries in communion with Deity.” 92:7.11 (1013.6)
For most of human history, fear has been one of our greatest teachers. Thunder was interpreted as divine anger. Eclipses were seen as omens. Disease was often attributed to unseen spirits. When we did not understand the world, we naturally feared it. Yet as knowledge advanced, many of those fears gave way to understanding. Science did not diminish the majesty of creation—it revealed its remarkable order. In the same way, authentic spiritual growth is meant to free us from fear-based religion and lead us toward a relationship with a God who invites trust rather than terror.
This revelation goes one step further. Just as civilization and science liberate us from superstition, spiritual enlightenment liberates us from the belief that someone else must stand between us and the Father. Every great teacher, every sacred text, every spiritual community can illuminate the path, but none replaces the personal relationship that God desires with each individual soul. The Father is not distant, inaccessible, or reserved for a privileged few. He speaks to every sincere heart willing to listen. Mature faith does not reject wise mentors; it simply recognizes that no intermediary can substitute for personal experience with the Divine.
Perhaps this is one of the defining marks of spiritual adulthood. We move from inherited belief to living conviction. We no longer follow truth because someone else told us to; we follow because we have encountered its transforming power for ourselves. Knowledge frees us from fearing the world. Faith frees us from fearing God. Together, they invite us into a life of confidence, curiosity, and direct communion with the One who has always been closer than our own breath. The journey of enlightenment is not about accumulating information—it is about removing every barrier that keeps us from knowing the Father personally.
