“When the flood tides of human adversity, selfishness, cruelty, hate, malice, and jealousy beat about the mortal soul, you may rest in the assurance that there is one inner bastion, the citadel of the spirit, which is absolutely unassailable; at least this is true of every human being who has dedicated the keeping of his soul to the indwelling spirit of the eternal God.” 100:2.7 (1096.4)
We must remember that even though we may be troubled by material adversities, that may include physical suffering, we can always find refuge in the spirit of God that dwells inside of us. As long as we have God as part of our soul, we can overcome any difficult situation. The "spirit of the eternal God" is that most unique gift we have, that allows us to be in communion with the father. We are truly lucky to have a fragment of God indwell us, and we are unique in that sense.
I sometimes wonder what Jesus had to undergo when he was crucified. I believe this is the clearest example of the "citadel of the spirit" that we can find. Jesus knew he was going to undergo a painful death, had the power to stop it, but chose to do the Father's will and allowed for the mortals of the time to crucify him. Nevertheless he knew that he could enter the citadel of the spirit and be able to bare the painful death he had to go trough. As an almighty creator son, he knew that God never wants his Creatures to suffer, nevertheless there' s inescapable suffering in the world. Jesus knew he could seek refuge in the spirit of God, and he did.
The uncertainties of life will always be present, and so will the spirit of God. We can always seek refuge from our material tribulations in the love of the spirit of God. The only ones that can enter and seek refuge is ourselves. We mustn't fear the vicissitudes of life, as long as we know we have the most powerful ally indwelling in our soul.
