A Higher Religion of Personal Experience

May 9, 2026 | Santiago Kneeland

The life of Jesus revealed a higher form of religion—one rooted not in ritual or tradition but in a personal, living relationship with the Universal Father.

A Higher Religion of Personal Experience

“In the Master’s life on Urantia, this and all other worlds of the local creation discover a new and higher type of religion, religion based on personal spiritual relations with the Universal Father and wholly validated by the supreme authority of genuine personal experience.” 196:0.4 (2087.4)

Throughout history, religion has often been expressed through traditions, ceremonies, and institutions designed to guide spiritual life. While these forms can provide structure and community, they sometimes overshadow the deeper purpose of religion itself. The life of Jesus revealed something profoundly transformative: that true religion is fundamentally personal, rooted in a direct relationship between the individual soul and the Universal Father.

This higher type of religion does not depend solely on doctrine or ritual authority. Instead, it grows out of genuine spiritual experience—moments when the human heart becomes aware of divine guidance, love, and presence. Jesus demonstrated that the kingdom of God begins within the individual, unfolding through faith, trust, and a sincere desire to do the will of the Father. In this way, religion becomes a living experience rather than a set of inherited beliefs.

Such a faith empowers individuals to live with greater purpose, courage, and compassion. When religion is grounded in personal spiritual experience, it becomes dynamic and transformative, shaping character and guiding actions. The life of Jesus stands as a timeless example that authentic religion flourishes when individuals discover God personally and allow that relationship to inspire their lives of service and love.
